Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise at the age of an infant. The aunt worked as an overnight nursing assistant in order to provide her with the opportunity to study art literature or theater. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay recognized that art is a powerful tool to promote the cause of activism. DuVernay grew up with a mother who was socially aware and taught her how to utilize the arts as a means of expressing herself. DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father was for many generations. DuVernay's dad recalled the civil rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, was later the inspiration to direct a movie about The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and received qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay was a student at the college at the time she began to become attracted to the field of production for broadcast journalism. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to sit at the house of a member of the jury and look through their trash. Her work left her dissatisfied in journalism, so she decided to shift her focus towards the industry of public relations. DuVernay was hired right from college to be a junior publicist at an unassuming studio. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. Besides PR, the agency developed several lifestyle websites like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
